Compare custom packaging suppliers by usable dimensions, materials, setup costs, packing, freight and approval terms—not unit price alone.
Start with one written brief: internal dimensions, contents and filled weight; quantity per size and artwork; board or paper direction; printing and finishes; inserts; assembled or flat packing; delivery city and required date. A quote for a plain folding carton cannot be compared directly with a wrapped rigid box, even when both are described as custom boxes.
Ask suppliers to identify structural design, cutting dies, printing setup, sample charges and production separately. Clarify which charges can be reused on an unchanged reorder and which apply again when size or artwork changes. This shows the difference between first-order cost and repeat-order cost.
Confirm whether measurements are internal or external. For paperboard, ask for the board type and thickness or weight; for corrugated mailers, ask for flute and liner direction; for bags, ask for paper or fabric specification and handle construction. Names such as “premium paper” are not enough for a technical comparison.
Add product price, samples, tooling, export packing, freight, insurance where applicable, duties or taxes, local handling and expected unusable quantity. Divide that total by the number of packages you can actually use. Reddit small-business discussions repeatedly flag freight and setup costs as reasons a low unit price can be misleading; those posts are individual experiences rather than verified market statistics.
Check what starts the production clock, how color and dimensions are approved, and what happens if artwork changes after sampling. Record the approved dieline, sample, material and packing plan together. The most useful quote is the one that makes the final deliverable easy to verify.
